Offsite Backups – Protect Your Data From A Disaster

It's a fact of modern life that backing up data is essential to prevent a data disaster. Still, something like one-third of computers are never backed up, according to 2,257 respondents surveyed by Harris Interactive. The survey came to the dismal conclusion that a scant 7% of users practice safe computing by backing up their systems on a daily (or nightly) basis.

"It's pitiful how few people protect their key data," says Dave Simpson, senior analyst at the market analysis firm 451 Group. "Once it's gone, it's gone."

There are two standard ways of backing up your data:

1.     OnSite Backup – External hard drive or tape drive with backup scheduling software

2.     OffSite Backup – Sometimes referred to as online or remote backup to the cloud

OnSite Backup keeps a local copy of your data and you can schedule this to take place on a daily basis.  A great way to keep your data safe locally.

OffSite Backup keeps your data safe in the “Cloud” and it can be scheduled to take place on a daily basis.  The key benefit of this service is that protects your data from a disaster (theft, fire, flood, etc.).  Not to mention, when your data is archived to the cloud, it is encrypted.

You never know when a disaster might take place so it’s important to protect your data from loss.  How would you be able to answer these questions: “How long will it take for your company to recover from a disaster?”  “Will you be able to recover your data from a disaster and if so, how long will it take?”  Without an Online backup scheme, more than likely, your answer will be either “I don’t know” or “Recovery will be a miracle”.  With an Onsite backup scheme, you’ll be able to answer that question: “I’ll be able to recover my data in the matter of hours”.  Which answer will you be able to provide?

A common trait of most humans is to be reactive instead of proactive and a lot of us learn things the hard way.  INFO-TEK wants to help make sure your data doesn’t fall into a disaster pitfall.  Please call us today to see how we can protect your data.

Connecting to Public Wi-Fi Isn’t Secure

Description: https://i4.createsend1.com/ei/r/91/854/74C/152017/csimport/security_july11_c_3.jpgAs businesses go global, or expand into new territory, managers and owners have found themselves travelling between locations, often connecting to the office via public Wi-Fi connections in airports, coffee shops, public buildings, etc. If you use public Wi-Fi to connect with the office while travelling, you may be creating a security risk for your company.

It’s a good idea to connect to public networks that require passwords when possible, as they tend to be more secure. Many public networks have a legal disclaimer stating network use and security. It pays to read these before connecting.

Times are Changing - Cope with BI

Description: https://i2.createsend1.com/ei/r/91/854/74C/152017/csimport/bi_july10_c_1.jpgIf you were to look back on why so many small businesses fail, you’ll find a million and one different reasons. These reasons can be, essentially, boiled down to a simple reason – they failed to predict and adapt to a constantly changing environment. If businesses used a process like Business Intelligence (BI), many may still be in operation today.

BI can be defined as the ability to turn a company’s processes into data that can be analyzed and converted into knowledge that is delivered to the right stakeholders at the right time and through the right medium. There are many upsides to BI solutions, and companies should be adopting them, here are five reasons why.

NEWS:  Microsoft sets Windows 8 launch as Oct. 26

Microsoft today announced that it will start selling Windows 8 on Friday, Oct. 26, a little more than three months from now.

New PCs equipped with the operating system will go on sale the same day, said Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc in a post to the company's blog.

Shortly before LeBlanc posted the news, Stephen Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live division, announced the date at Microsoft's Global eXchange (MGX), an annual internal mass meeting of company executives, salespeople and product managers.

The date wasn't a huge surprise: Windows 7 launched on Oct. 22, 2009, the second-to-last Thursday of that month. Several media outlets, including Computerworld had used the Windows 7 date to peg the likely launch of Windows 8 to Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012.
